A guardian ad litem is someone the court appoints to represent the best interests of the child in custody proceedings, like divorce cases where both parents are seeking custody. A GAL is meant to serve as a neutral, objective voice for the child.
The Role and Responsibilities of a Guardian Ad Litem
They may interview the child, depending on their age and maturity, as well as talk with parents, teachers, or others involved in the child’s life. After gathering that information, the GAL will submit a report to the court with recommendations about what’s best for the child. The judge may rely heavily on that input when making custody decisions.
