Understanding Oklahoma’s Criminal Record Databases
Did you know that here in Oklahoma, there are two other registries or databases that are not governed by OSPI? When it comes to expunging records, these databases can be fairly difficult or outright impossible to navigate. The complexities involved in removing any type of criminal record from these registries are significant.
My name is Aaron Grubb, and I’m the Tahlequah criminal attorney at Wirth Law Office. In this video, we’re going to take a closer look at the Oklahoma Sex Offender Registry and the Mary Gripley Violent Offenders Registry or database.
The Challenges of Expungement
Anyone can request information from these databases for just $2. Most inquiries to these databases cost the same, allowing individuals to see details such as the location of known offenders, their birthdays, and even their photographs. Unfortunately, for those individuals listed on these databases, getting their names off the lists can be exceedingly challenging.
The process for expunging records from the Sex Offender Registry is particularly difficult. There are very narrow exceptions in the statutes that apply to those seeking to have their records wiped clean. In contrast, the Mary Gripley Violent Offenders Database offers no exceptions, making it nearly impossible to expunge records from this database.
