Understanding Legal Discovery Through Requests for Production
Hi, my name is Aaron Grubb. I’m a Tahlequah family law attorney at Wirth Law Office, and in this video, we’re going to talk about Requests for Production—often referred to as RFPs.
A Request for Production is part of the discovery process in a legal case. It allows one party to ask the opposing side to produce documents or records that are relevant to the case.
Examples of Requests for Production
For example, you might request documentation of the other party’s employee benefits, including any information about their 401(k).
If someone isn’t paying child support, you might request medical records to verify a condition that prevents them from working and justifies imputing them at minimum wage.
You could also ask for all Venmo transactions if there’s suspicion—or evidence—that they’ve been secretly sending large sums of money to someone else.
The Relevance of Requested Items
Requests for Production can be broad, but the requested items must be relevant to the legal issues in the case. This ensures that the process remains focused and efficient.
