Your Guide to Understanding Municipal Tickets
Hi, my name is Aaron Grubb. I’m a Tahlequah misdemeanor attorney at Wirth Law Office. In this video, we’re just going to talk about one of my cases and what I think is a perfect example of why you should always get an attorney early on in your case.
I’ve got a client who’s dealing with a municipal ticket involving an alleged hit-and-run, and the facts are pretty hairy. Due to that, both the arresting officer and the chief of police told my client, “Hey, you don’t need to worry about this ticket. Don’t even hire an attorney. This will all get settled at your first appearance.”
The Importance of Early Legal Representation
Thankfully, the client didn’t listen to them. Once we actually got to the municipal courthouse, the judge said, “Well, the prosecutor isn’t here, so you can either take this $300 fine or set it for trial.” Obviously, we said, “These are really bad facts, and my client didn’t do this,” so we set it for trial.
What could have been a bullying tactic by the municipality—forcing my innocent client to accept the fine—we’re now turning around and pursuing justice by getting the case dismissed.
I just wanted to share this update as a reminder of why you should always involve an attorney early on in your criminal case. These kinds of situations aren’t uncommon. People get bad advice all the time and end up stuck with a pretty lousy outcome.
